What Tanker Work Actually Is

People search tanker hire, interceptor emptying, cesspit emptying and flood extraction as if they were three different firms. They are one job on one plant: a vacuum tanker that takes the volume a van-mounted jetter cannot. The van will clear most house drains. It will not empty a full interceptor, a cesspit, or a basement that has taken a thousand litres of sewage.

We extract — interceptors, grease traps, cesspits, septic tanks, flooded basements, gullies and pits. We jet and vacuum on the same visit where a combination unit is the right machine, so silt is broken up and taken away rather than flushed into the next chamber. And we dispose at a licensed facility, with a waste transfer note, rather than hoping the nearest manhole will take it.

Why Sites Book a Tanker from Drain 247

Plant That Matches the Volume

A van jetter is not an interceptor empty. If the chamber is full, we send a tanker rather than arriving with the wrong vehicle.

Licensed Waste Carrier

Liquid waste leaves site with a waste transfer note. We do not move the problem into the public sewer.

Quoted Before We Roll

Fixed price before the tanker leaves the yard. Disposal is in that figure, not a surprise on the invoice.

Emergency Flood Extraction

A real person answers. Tell us the volume and the access and we will give you a realistic window, not an optimistic one.

Planned Emptying

Grease traps and interceptors that cannot afford to back up into the kitchen. Regular visits cost less than an emergency close.

Based in Watford

Tanker work across Hertfordshire and north west London. We will tell you honestly if the vehicle cannot get in.

Book Tanker Emptying, Extraction and Disposal

Interceptor emptying, cesspit emptying, flood extraction and licensed disposal — booked now, so the waste leaves site rather than sitting in the chamber.

Call with the address, what is full or flooded, and whether a tanker can get on the site. We tell you whether a tanker or a van unit is the right plant, when it can be there, and what it will cost. There is no call-out fee. The figure we quote before the vehicle leaves the yard is the figure on the invoice.

Most interceptor and cesspit jobs around Watford, Bushey, Rickmansworth and St Albans are a same-day tanker where access allows. If a van jetter or a culvert crew is the right plant, we will say so before anyone rolls.

What the Visit Covers

Extraction, combination jetting where it is needed, and licensed disposal on one visit. We do not empty a chamber and leave the silt sitting in the next one.

Interceptor Emptying

Grease, oil and silt interceptors on commercial sites — restaurants, forecourts, retail parks — emptied on a schedule or as an emergency.

Flood Extraction

Basements, plant rooms, lightwells and ground floors after a burst, a blocked sewer or a storm. Standing water leaves site, not into the neighbour’s drain.

Cesspits and Septic Tanks

Off-mains emptying. Hoses long enough to reach a rear-garden tank without driving on the lawn. A camera on the outlet if the tank cannot drain.

Gully Sucking and Pits

Road gullies, ACO channels and silt pits where the volume is beyond a van. Combination units jet and vacuum on the same visit.

Combination Jetvac

Where silt has to be broken up before it will move, we jet and extract together rather than hiring two vehicles.

Waste Transfer Note

You get the paperwork a landowner, kitchen or authority actually needs. Duty of care is not a slogan.

Interceptor Emptying, Grease Traps and Petrol Separators

A full interceptor is not a van-jetting job. Grease, oil and silt sit in a chamber that has to be emptied, not punched through. Restaurants, takeaways, retail parks and forecourts book this as planned maintenance so the kitchen does not close on a Saturday night — or as an emergency when it already has.

We lift the cover, extract the contents, and take the waste to a licensed facility. If the interceptor has a downstream drain that is scaled or fat-lined, that run is still drain jetting from a van. Two jobs, one visit where we can: the chamber emptied, the pipe scoured.

Call with the site, the chamber type if you know it, and whether a tanker can get to the lid. We quote a fixed price before we roll.

Flood Extraction from Basements, Plant Rooms and Lightwells

When a sewer backs up, a pipe bursts or a storm fills a basement, the first job is to get the water out. A pump into the nearest gully is not extraction — it is moving the flood next door. We vacuum the standing water into the tanker and take it away.

Tell us what is under water, roughly how deep, and whether we can get a tanker to the kerb. We will say what can be there and what it will cost. If the cause is a blocked drain, we clear that as well rather than emptying the same basement twice.

This is not a blocked toilet and not a culvert under a road. It is volume. If you are not sure, describe what you can see.

Cesspit and Septic Tank Emptying

Off-mains drainage still has to be emptied. A cesspit is a sealed tank that fills until someone takes the contents away. A septic tank treats and discharges — until the outlet silts, the soakaway fails, or the tank is overdue. Either way, the job is a tanker, not a van.

We park on the driveway or the road and run hose to the cover, so we are not driving on the lawn. If the tank is filling faster than it should, we can camera the outlet rather than emptying a tank that cannot drain. That survey is quoted separately. You decide.

Call with the address and when it was last emptied if you know. We quote before we roll. Waste leaves site with the paperwork.

Van Jetting, a Tanker, or a Culvert?

A house drain, a kitchen run and most gullies are a van-mounted jetter — that is drain jetting. A full interceptor, a cesspit, a flooded basement or a pit full of silt needs volume and extraction. That is this page.

A culvert under a road, driveway or field is a different asset again: culvert cleaning, not an interceptor empty dressed up as highway work. If you are not sure, say what is backing up. We will send the right vehicle rather than arriving with the wrong one.

Emptying a chamber and leaving the waste in the next manhole is not a clean. Licensed disposal is part of the price.

How a Tanker Visit Works

Access first, then extract, then take the waste away. We do not start a tanker job we cannot finish.

  1. Check the Access

A tanker needs room to park and a route for the hose. We will tell you if the vehicle cannot get in, rather than forcing it into a courtyard it will not fit.

  2. Open the Chamber

Interceptor lid, cesspit cover, manhole or basement lightwell. Barriers and cones go down so the open hole is a work zone, not a drop-off.

  3. Extract, and Jet If It Needs It

Vacuum first. Where silt will not move, a combination unit jets and extracts on the same visit rather than leaving a crust for the next overflow.

  4. Take It Away and Leave the Note

Waste goes to a licensed facility. You get a waste transfer note. The chamber is empty, not “cleared” into the next pipe.

Flooded Basement or Full Interceptor?

Say what you are dealing with and we will tell you whether a tanker or a van unit is the right plant — and when it can be there.

What Our Customers Say

Great service and a great team of engineers. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone. Work carried out to a high standard and the call-out was within the required time.

Tom Hamilton St Albans

Turned up when they said they would, told me the price up front, and cleared a blockage two other firms had failed on.

Rachel D Rickmansworth

I really needed someone to come and unblock my outside drain as it was causing flooding issues. I found these guys online and they came the same day. Very impressed.

Common Questions About Tanker Work

What Is Tanker Hire?

On this page it means we send a vacuum tanker to empty, extract or take liquid waste away. It is not a vehicle you drive yourself. Call with the address and what is full or flooded and we quote a fixed price before we roll.

How Quickly Can a Tanker Be on Site?

For an emergency in Watford and the surrounding towns we aim for the same day. Tell us the volume and the access and we will give you a realistic window rather than an optimistic one.

Do You Take the Waste Away?

Yes. Liquid waste is taken to a licensed facility. That cost is included in the quote so it does not appear as a surprise on the invoice. You get a waste transfer note.

Can You Access Tight Sites?

We will tell you honestly if the vehicle cannot get in. Some jobs are better served by a smaller unit plus more time than by forcing a tanker into a courtyard it will not fit.

Do You Empty Interceptors and Grease Traps?

Yes. Grease, oil and silt interceptors on commercial sites, and grease traps for kitchens, are a regular part of the work. The chamber is emptied and the waste leaves site. A downstream kitchen run that is still fat-lined is drain jetting.

Do You Empty Cesspits and Septic Tanks?

Yes. We park off the lawn where we can and run hose to the cover. If the tank is filling too fast we can camera the outlet rather than emptying a tank that cannot drain.

Is This the Same as Drain Jetting?

No. Jetting scours a pipe wall with high-pressure water. A tanker extracts volume — a full chamber, a flood, a pit of silt. Combination units can do both on one visit. If the job is a house drain, start on drain jetting.

Is This the Same as Culvert Cleaning?

No. A culvert is a large-diameter watercourse under a road or field. That is culvert cleaning. An interceptor, cesspit or flooded basement is tanker work.

How Much Does a Tanker Visit Cost?

We quote a fixed price before the vehicle leaves the yard, with no call-out fee. The figure depends on access, volume and whether it is an interceptor, a cesspit or a flood. We do not publish a single menu price because a grease trap is not a flooded basement.

Are You a Licensed Waste Carrier?

Yes. Waste is taken to a licensed facility and you get a waste transfer note. That is your duty of care, not a promise that the nearest manhole will take it.
