Electro Mechanical Drain Cleaning Services

Standard drain jetting is powerful, but it can’t always cut through solid obstructions like concrete, tree roots, or hardened uric scale.
At Drain 247, we use advanced Electro Mechanical cleaning (EMC) to tackle the blockages that water alone cannot shift.

Precision Cleaning for The Toughest Blockages
Sometimes, a standard plunger or high-pressure water jet isn’t enough. When your drainage system is choked by hard obstructions—like tree roots, concrete, or heavy uric scale—you need a solution with torque and precision.
At Drain 247, our Electro Mechanical Drain Cleaning (EMC) service is the heavy-duty solution for blockages that refuse to budge. Using flexible steel cables and specialised cutting heads, we grind away obstructions without the need for excavation, restoring full flow to your internal and external pipes.

What is Electro Mechanical Drain Cleaning?
Electro Mechanical cleaning (often called “drain snaking” or “rotary mechanical cleaning”) involves feeding a flexible steel cable into the pipework. The tip of the cable is fitted with a motorised cutting head or chain flail tailored to the specific type of blockage.
The cable rotates at high speed, allowing the head to physically scrape, cut, and grind away deposits attached to the pipe walls.
It is the ideal solution for:
Small Bore Pipes: Perfect for sinks, urinals, and toilets (pipes under 100mm) where water jetting might cause flooding or blowback.
Tortuous Bends: The flexible steel cables can navigate tight U-bends and traps that rigid rods cannot reach.
Hard Substances: It doesn’t just push the blockage; it pulverizes it.

When Do You Need This Service? While High-Pressure Water Jetting is great for soft blockages (fat, grease, silt), Electro Mechanical cleaning is required for hard obstructions.
The Drain 247 Process
We don’t just guess; we engineer a solution.
- Assessment: We identify the symptoms. If necessary, we use a CCTV Drain Camera to locate the exact position and nature of the blockage.
- Tool Selection: Our engineers select the correct attachment—chain flails for cast iron pipes, cutting blades for roots, or softer heads for plastic PVC pipes to ensure no damage occurs to your infrastructure.
- The Clean: We feed the cable into the stack or drain, pulverizing the obstruction.
- Flush & Verify: Once the blockage is broken down, we flush the debris away and test the flow to guarantee the problem is solved.
Electro Mechanical vs. High-Pressure Water Jetting
Not sure which service you need? Here is how they compare:
| Feature | Electro Mechanical (EMC) | High-Pressure Water Jetting |
| Best For | Hard scale, roots, concrete, localized blocks. | Grease, silt, leaves, general maintenance. |
| Environment | Indoors (Clean, low splash risk). | Outdoors (High water volume). |
| Pipe Size | Excellent for small bore (sinks/urinals). | Better for large main drains. |
| Action | Grinding/Cutting. | Flushing/Scouring. |
Note: Our engineers carry equipment for both methods and will recommend the best approach upon arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will electro mechanical cleaning damage my pipes?
No. We select cutting heads that are softer than the pipe material but harder than the blockage. For plastic pipes, we use specific heads to prevent scouring.
Can this remove concrete from a drain?
Yes. This is one of the few methods capable of removing hardened concrete or grout without digging up the floor.
Do you serve my area?
Drain 247 covers London and Hertfordshire. Check our coverage map or call us to confirm.
Is the process noisy?
It can be. Because the machine uses a steel cable rotating at high speed inside a pipe, there will be some noise and vibration. If you are in a busy office environment or a customer-facing business, we recommend scheduling this work during quieter hours or outside of trading times. We offer 24/7 service to accommodate this.
Will this make a mess inside my property?
We take every precaution to keep your premises clean. Our engineers use protective sheets and our machines are designed to contain the rotating cable within a drum or casing. However, as we are extracting blockage material from the drain, there is a small risk of splashback. We advise clearing the immediate area around the sink or stack before we arrive.
Do you need access to power?
Yes. Our electro mechanical machines require a standard 240v or 110v power supply. If the blockage is in a remote location (like a car park or large warehouse) without nearby power, please let us know in advance so we can bring a generator.
Is this safe for plastic (PVC) pipes?
Absolutely. This is a common concern, but modern electro mechanical cleaning is perfectly safe for PVC pipes when performed by a professional. We simply swap the heavy-duty cutting heads for specialized “chain knockers” or sanding heads that are designed to clean the plastic surface without piercing or cracking it.
Does this use harmful chemicals?
No. Electro mechanical cleaning is a purely physical process. We rely on the torque of the machine and the design of the cutting head to remove the blockage. This makes it an eco-friendly option and safe for septic tanks or treatment plants where chemicals could kill the necessary bacteria.
