Commercial Drain Unblocking vs Domestic: What Explains the Cost Difference?

A blocked drain at home is usually a hair, soap or sanitary clog in a 100mm pipe. A restaurant, office, industrial unit or managed block is a different scale of pipe, plant and paperwork. That is what changes the price.

If you are comparing commercial quotes, this is what the figure is actually paying for. Domestic rates are on the 2026 cost guide.

Heavy Grease, Interceptors and Waste Disposal

A van-mounted jetter clears localised fat in a house drain or a small café line. A commercial kitchen builds hardened fats, oils and grease along long runs. That needs a rotary cutter and heavy jetting to restore the bore.

Waste from a commercial grease trap needs a licensed carrier, compliant transport and a waste transfer note. It is not automatically hazardous waste. Petrol and oil interceptor waste from a forecourt, industrial site or multi-storey car park can be hazardous. Those jobs need a consignment note and a separate price. Both are tanker work.

Tankers and High-Volume Jetters

Commercial mains outside the building are often 150mm to 300mm, even when the kitchen branch inside is still 100mm. Deep chambers and a large volume of silt are beyond a portable jetter.

A combination tanker jets the line and vacuums the liquid waste on the same visit. The commercial jetter also moves a much higher volume of water than a van pack. The tanker costs more to run, fuel and tip than a standard van.

The Rate Does Not Change at Night

A blocked stack in a hotel or a backed-up main in a shop can close the premises. Drain 247 answers around the clock. Drain unblocking is £120 an hour, whether it is 3am or Sunday, with no call-out fee.

A commercial quote is higher than a house visit when the job needs a tanker, a heavy jetter, a chamber pumped out, or waste taken off site. That total is agreed before the vehicle rolls.

Method Statements and Site Rules

Commercial sites ask for a risk assessment and method statement, confined-space certification where the chamber requires it, a site induction, and public liability insurance before work starts.

What Actually Differs

  • Pipe size: a house is typically 100mm. A commercial kitchen branch is often still 100mm. The site main is frequently 150mm to 300mm.
  • Plant: a house job is a van-pack jetter or cables. A commercial chamber is a heavy jetter or a combination tanker.
  • Waste: a house clearance rarely leaves site. A grease trap needs a waste transfer note. A petrol interceptor can need a hazardous consignment note.
  • Price: van unblocking is £120 an hour, day or night. A tanker or a disposal job is a separate fixed quote.

For a scheduled grease trap empty, tanker cleaning, or an urgent commercial clearance in London or Hertfordshire, the price is fixed before anyone sets off.

Common Questions

Does Drain 247 Charge More at Night?

No. Drain unblocking is £120 an hour in the day, at night and at weekends. There is no call-out fee.

Why Is a Commercial Drain Quote Higher Than a House Visit?

The hourly rate for unblocking does not change. The quote is higher when the job needs a tanker, a heavy jetter, a chamber pumped out, or waste taken to a licensed site. That figure is agreed before the vehicle leaves.
